Even though tons of fitness business owners will attempt to grow their businesses this year, many will not succeed. Others will enjoy an increase in membership and revenue, but nearly everyone will not get the results that they’re looking for. Maybe it’s even happened to you already. You start to increase your membership and then you end up stagnating. Or since your membership numbers are deteriorating you try to create a new program but that doesn’t seem to work out either. It’s frustrating. It’s humiliating, and it’s just exhausting. You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know:

There are things that you know. As a trainer, you know how to help people lose weight, increase muscle mass, and become healthier. Right? Good. So those are the things that you know. Then there are the things that you don’t know. I won’t assume to know you, but I am pretty sure that you don’t know how to build a space shuttle. Right? But here’s the thing, you know that learning how to build a space shuttle exists. You could go to college to become an aeronautical engineer and learn how to build a space shuttle. Make sense so far? Those are the things you don’t know.

Then there is this other space (no pun intended) called “You don’t know what you don’t know.” This is the knowledge that not only do you not know (like building a space shuttle). But you don’t even know that it exists! Meaning that you wouldn’t even know that it was something that you could learn. So what if the answers to your problems were in this space. The things that you don’t that you don’t know. What if all the answers to your questions, the reasons why you feel like you can’t control your business, the cause of your stagnant membership were things that you couldn’t possibly know. Wouldn’t that be a relief? 

With that understanding the first thing you can do is stop beating yourself up for struggling to make a change in your circumstances. The second thing that you need to do is figure out how to access that knowledge. Now you can go ahead and start searching tons of things on google and listening to podcasts. That is actually a great way to start to unfold that knowledge and open your mind to all the possibilities. But wouldn’t it be easier to work with someone that has helped people through the same exact circumstances before. Instead of loading your mind up with tons of knowledge that leaves you more confused on your next step. I’m sure you’ve felt that before. Plus, how is that knowledge going to be tailored to your unique situation? You are kind of just shooting in the dark again. Right?

So who is the person I’m talking about? Are they a fitness business owner that can guide you? Maybe. I am sure that would be helpful. But they are a business owner, not someone that is skilled in helping you navigate your circumstances and your thoughts. What if you had someone that had guided people just like you over and over again from A to Z? Someone that knew the route so well that they could bring you to your destination while blindfolded? Someone that knew the common pitfalls, someone that knew the things that definitely wouldn’t work, and knew the tricks to get you where you are going faster. Wouldn’t you take that opportunity? This is what a fitness business coach can do for you.

But it wouldn’t be wise to go out and find any affordable life coach or even a business coach for that matter. Just like an Olympic swimmer isn’t trained by an Olympic gymnastics coach. That wouldn’t make sense. So don’t go running to find a business coach. You need someone that has specialized in helping fitness business owners so that you can get the right attention that you need. They are going to understand your language and your ideal customers. They are going to understand the ins and outs of your business. As a successful coach, they have worked with tons of other businesses just like yours. They are going to be able to take those years of knowledge and expertise and bring it directly to you. They are going to have seen certain methods play out in real time and be able to truly understand why those methods did or did not work.

For instance, if you go look up ‘fitness business marketing’ on Google. You will get an endless list of results of people telling you what works best. Some are going to be marketing agencies that want to sell their services, some are going to be software companies that want to sell their products, and this list is truly endless. Now, those parties may be trying to help you, but are they going to really have “on the court” knowledge? Or are they up in the bleachers shouting down things that “could work pretty well”? Like I said earlier, it is good to read these things to get your bearings in the industry. To begin to understand marketing, sales, business, and finance. But it is not the end all be all. Certainly not. This is why every fitness business owner needs a coach to reach their goals. This is why you need a coach if you want to perform your best.
